Bamboo or hardwood flooring?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

I'm keen on using bamboo flooring in our house rather than hardwood because of it's sustainability and am concerned about using products that are less harmful to the environment.

Considering bamboo is a more sustainable source yet it has to be transported from the other side of the world, what will have less of an environmental impact, bamboo or hardwood flooring?

However also considering this, where does most hardwood flooring come from?

Furthermore, is bamboo flooring suitable to be used in conjunction with wet underfloor heating (as opposed to electric)?

"bamboo it looks better and it a sustainable plant which means ur damagin the environment to use it."

Haven't you contradicted yourself there? Bamboo is a grass which has speedy growth and it can be very evasive making it difficult to cause it to go into decline.

There is one drawback to bamboo. The demand is outpacing the sources and new lands are being developed. The problem - they are cutting down hardwood forests (some old forests) to grow more bamboo. Although it may not mean much, there are certification labels for bamboo that indicates sustainability. It costs more, but if you are concerned that is one way to go.

I am installing bamboo hardwood floors in my kitchen, which currently has two layers of linoleum. Can install them over the linoleum or do I have to tear it out?

tearing it out is the best way to do it

My bamboo hardwood floor bubbled in a spot in the middle of the floor after two years. How do I fix it?

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

After two years my bamboo hardwood floor that was glued directly to the concrete foundation bubbled up. The spot is about 8ft long and six boards wide. The high point is about 3 inches. The floor is tongue and grove. I believe some sort of moisture caused it. Any ideas? How can I go about fixing the issue?

I had the same problem. 2 years ago when they first started selling bamboo hardwood at Home Depot, there wasn’t a lot of info available with the package to help you properly install the flooring, and the adhesive they sold with it wasn’t the correct formulation. What they never told you in the installation instructions was that the concrete floor needs to be sealed to prevent moisture from coming up.
Your first thing to check is if you left enough of a gap at the walls when the install was done. That was my problem. The wood swelled and when it got to the wall, it had nowhere to go and buckled at the point where the glue was weakest. If this is your problem, you need to try cutting the drywall out enough to give the flooring more room to expand. If the drywall was already cut and the flooring is hitting the wall bottom plate (horizontal 2×4) then you can cut the flooring with a jamb saw and remove a small bit of it to give clearance.
